"Beware, this plant may be smaller than the picture!" Native to the rainforests of Central America, the big, bold Monstera deliciosa plant is also known as the "split-leaf philodendron." This easy-to-grow climbing evergreen can be found in many design spaces for its "wow" factor.
-
Indoors the plant has a moderate growth and can increase in height about 30-60 cm per year. Its naturally glossy large heart-shaped leaves have a characteristic split. You will also see intricate aerial roots growing out of the soil, which benefit the plant by supporting the stems that hold the leaves that can grow up to 1m long.
Plant them outdoors in the correct zone at any time of the year. the year and it will also produce tawny flowers that are pollinated by bees and edible juicy fruits with the combined taste of pineapple and banana. However, fruiting is not common among houseplants. This beautiful plant can be toxic to pets. -
Light
This evergreen prefers bright, indirect sunlight in temperatures that remain consistently between 18 to 24 degrees. Too much direct light in warmer months can burn the foliage. Still, place houseplants outside in direct sunlight at least once a year to promote luxuriant growth.
Outdoors, the Swiss cheese plant can grow in full shade of deep woods and in partial shade of light woods.
Soil
When established in a pot, it needs peat-based potting soil. Outdoors it is suitable for light sandy, medium loam and heavy clay soils with acidic or neutral pH. However, it does best in well-drained, moderately moist soil.
Watering
Water the plant regularly during the growing season, every one to two weeks. Water until the excess drains through the drainage holes. Do not put the excess water back into the plant's container, as the plant has absorbed all the water it needs. The soil will need to dry out slightly between waterings. Water only occasionally in fall and winter. To increase indoor humidity, mist the foliage with a spray bottle of demineralized water or rainwater.
Fertilizer
Choose a balanced liquid 20-20-20 fertilizer to keep the plant during feed every few weeks throughout the growing season. Dilute 1/2 teaspoon of the fertilizer in a gallon of water. Use the diluted fertilizer instead of regular watering. Pour the mixture into the soil until it begins to flow out of the drainage holes. Discard the excess diluted fertilizer as the plant has taken what it needs and cannot use the extra it drains. -
