  • ZZ plants, also called Zanzibar gems, are low-maintenance houseplants characterized by their glossy, broad, oval-shaped leaves that flare upwards. The immaculate leaves are waxy and so deep green that these plants are sometimes mistaken for artificial. They are slow growing plants so you don't need to repot them often, but if you do plant or repot a zz do so in the spring or summer when she is in an active growth phase. The plants are slightly toxic to humans and animals.

  • Caring for ZZ plants
ZZ plants are known as low maintenance, easy to care for houseplants that can keep even gardeners with the blackest of thumbs alive with a minimum of care. All they need to thrive is sufficient light and a good watering every few weeks. Don't worry too much about forgetting to water your zz plant though - these plants grow from rhizomes, which help them store water underground, making them a drought tolerant plant. While she thrives outdoors in Africa, elsewhere she is best grown indoors. If you want to grow them outdoors, plant them in a container that you can bring inside when the temperatures cool.

ZZ plants have naturally shiny leaves that can start to look dull like dust over time accumulates. Never clean the leaves of a Zanzibar jewel with a commercial leaf brightener, as this will clog the pores of the plant. Instead, gently wipe away dust and dirt with a damp washcloth to restore shine.

    Light
ZZ plants tolerate a wide range of lighting conditions, making them well suited for the indoor cultivation. The plants grow well in low light, but prefer bright, indirect light. However, the plants can get leggy quickly if they don't get enough light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves of your plants.

    Soil
ZZ plants are not overly fussy about their potting medium, as long as it drains well. Most standard potting mixes should be sufficient for your plant. If extra drainage is needed, it helps to mix in perlite or sand.

    Water
Due to their thick rhizomes, these plants are extremely drought tolerant and can withstand little watering. ZZ plants generally need to be watered as soon as the soil has completely dried out - usually once every two weeks, depending on their growing conditions. It is better to water your plant less than to overwater it. When watering, add enough to drain the moisture from the bottom of the pot and discard the excess.

    Temperature and humidity
Average household temperatures and humidity are fine for Zanzibar gems. ZZ plants don't tolerate cold temperatures well (no lower than 8 degrees), so avoid placing your plant in a place close to drafts or particularly cold areas of your home. ZZ plants don't require humid conditions, but if your home runs on the dry side, consider increasing the humidity around your plant by purchasing a humidifier or placing it on top of a water dish.

    Fertilizer
ZZ plants generally do not need regular fertilization to thrive. However, if you hope to increase the size or vigor of your plant, fertilize your plant once or twice during the active growing season with houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
