Caring for houseplants in winter

In winter, most houseplants grow more slowly. There is less light, the heating is on and the air becomes drier. With a few small adjustments, your plants will make it through the winter peacefully.

Less water

A plant that grows more slowly drinks less. Feel the soil with your finger and only water when the top layer is dry. Too much water in winter is one of the most common reasons why plants struggle. Use water at room temperature.

As much light as possible

Place your plants a little closer to the window, because the days are short. Turn them a quarter turn every now and then so they do not grow crooked. Keep them away from cold windows and drafts.

Watch out for the heating

A plant right above or next to a radiator dries out quickly. Give it a spot with some distance. Plants with thin leaves like a little extra moisture in the air, for example by grouping them together.

Dust off the leaves

With little light, every bit of leaf counts. Wipe large leaves with a soft cloth, or use the Aqua Leaf Cleanser from Sowvital. It removes dust and dirt and supports the natural shine.

Feeding: take it easy

In winter, a plant needs little food. Feed less or pause, and start again when growth picks up in spring. For that, you can use the Houseplant Serum from Pepin, a natural food based on seaweed. For plants that absorb little water through the roots, the House Plant Spritz from Sowvital is handy: it feeds through the leaves.

Look out for unwanted visitors

Dry, warm air sometimes attracts bugs. Look under the leaves every now and then. Neem Oil from Pepin is a natural protection against parasites and fungi.

Repotting can wait

Repotting is best done in spring. If it really has to be done, Willow Water from Pepin helps the roots get started. Or bring your plant and pot to the store, then we will repot it on the spot.

If you want to try everything, then the Three Step Discovery Set is a good start: cleaning, feeding and spraying in a small size. If you have doubts about a plant, come by Lange Vesting 16 in Sint-Andries and ask us.

Frequently asked questions

How often do I water in winter?

Less than in summer. Only water when the top layer of soil feels dry.

Should I feed my plants in winter?

Little or not at all. Start again when growth picks up in spring.

My plant is near the heating, is that bad?

A spot right next to a radiator dries out the plant quickly. Better place it a little further away.

Can I have Stera repot my plant?

Yes, bring your plant and pot to the store and we will give it new soil.
